Mom & Me Cook-Off Was Delicious Success

Mom & Me Cook-Off Was Delicious Success

With a little help from a special someone, young chefs from across the area chopped, shredded, and stirred up their favorite healthy recipe in hopes of taking home the top prize.

On Saturday May 17th, young chefs ages 7 to 12 were invited to grab their mom, grandma, aunt, or other special female and prepare a creative, delicious, and nutritious recipe in the Mom & Me Firehouse Cook-Off. All Children's Hospital, Kohl's Cooks for Kids, and Lealman Fire District teamed up to host the event at the Lealman Fire Station.

In total, 11 teams competed for the prizes of Heart Healthy, Mom's Choice, and Kid's Choice. A panel of judges including firefighters and a Kohl's Cooks for Kids culinary expert, as well as all of the moms and kids in attendance, were able to sample all of the dishes and vote on their favorite. The kids picked Chef Kameron's sweet and fruity Favorite Smoothie, while the moms chose Chef Juanita's spicy-sweet Healthy Turkey Chili. For the Heart Healthy prize, the panel of judges decided Chef Savannah's Spicy Garlic Stir-Fry was made of all the right ingredients.
In addition to the cook-off, families were also able to enjoy great music and activities from Radio Disney, jump ropes, hula hoops, and other outdoor fun brought by Great Explorations Children's Museum, flowerpot decorating, and a bounce house. Kids were also able to explore a real fire truck and spray the fire hose.

Since 2007, Kohl's has been supporting the efforts at All Children's to help families learn about nutrition and preparing healthy meals. Under the Kohl's grant, All Children's offers fun and interactive classes and events that encourage children to make healthy choices and teaches them basic culinary skills so they can assist the family in making tasty and healthy recipes.
